Pictured above is my 1996 Chevy Impala SS. This is the last year of GM's old style body on frame big cars. 1996 is also the only year they added the floor shifter. These cars came equipped with detuned Corvette LT1 engine that produced 260 HP and 330 ft/lbs. of torque.
Other factory differences from the Caprice Classic are reduced ride height, 4 wheel disc brakes, 17 inch tires, faster ratio steering box, Limited slip rear axle, front grill, and most of the suspension components are shared from the law enforcement package. Top speed is claimed to be 140+, not me with a 4,500 lb car and 0-60 in 7.1 seconds.
I'm the second caretaker of this vehicle and it is in excellent shape. The original owner really took care of this SS. Currently it has 58,000 miles. The interior and exterior are extremely clean. It still has the original floor mats in perfect condition, which is a challenge due to the light gray color.
The car has never been hit; has only has two small chips on the front end from road debris. This color is the dark metallic gray green; 10,400 were produced in 1996. The only modification done to this car is the previous owner added a Flowmaster exhaust kit from the cats back. I intend to keep the car in stock condition.
This car is a blast to drive!!! If you ever get the chance to drive or purchase one, jump at it!
